Ho’oponopono

Ho’oponopono is a traditional Hawaiian practice of reconciliation, forgiveness, and restoring harmony.

At its heart, it’s a simple yet powerful way of taking responsibility for your inner world—your thoughts, emotions, and the energy you carry—and gently bringing it back into balance.

The modern form of Ho’oponopono is often practiced through four simple phrases:

  • I’m sorry

  • Please forgive me

  • Thank you

  • I love you

How it works

These words aren’t about blame—they’re about awareness, release, and returning to a place of peace within yourself.

Ho’oponopono is based on the idea that what we experience in life is, in some way, connected to what we hold within—memories, emotions, patterns, and beliefs.

By repeating these phrases, you’re not trying to “fix” anything outside of you. Instead, you’re clearing what’s within—creating space for clarity, ease, and a deeper sense of calm.

What can you use it for?

This practice can be used in many areas of your life, including:

  • Letting go of past experiences or emotional pain

  • Softening difficult relationships (with others or yourself)

  • Moving through stress, anxiety, or overwhelm

  • Releasing guilt, shame, or lingering thoughts

  • Finding peace in situations you can’t control

  • Creating more self-love, compassion, and acceptance

It can be directed toward a situation, another person, or simply toward yourself—especially in moments when you’re being hard on yourself or holding onto something internally.

You can use it in the moment—when something feels heavy—or as a daily practice to stay more centered and grounded.

A Simple Way to Practice

Bring to mind a person, situation, or feeling that feels unresolved or heavy.

Then, gently repeat the phrases, either out loud or silently:

I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you

You can also direct these words inward—offering them to yourself.

There’s no need to force anything—just allow the words to move through you and notice what begins to soften.

Letting Go

Ho’oponopono is less about understanding everything…
and more about letting go.

A gentle return to love, forgiveness, and peace—within yourself.
